While aggressively expanding in Italy, Wizz Air stays determined not to engage with labor unions.
The Hungarian low-cost carrier revealed its plans in a letter to the Italian Ministry of Labor and Social Policies, obtained by Italian media and confirmed by Reuters.
The statement came after a series of government-organized negotiations between the carrier and various unions.
In the letter, Wizz Air said it wants to keep a general rule of “not adopting the methods of collective bargaining” where possible.
The airline has been aggressively expanding in Italy since 2020, filling the gap left by the troubled Italian flag carrier Alitalia. In March 2021, the fourth Italian Wizz Air base was opened in Palermo.
The expansion has sparked a heated competition with other airlines, including the Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair, which has been enjoying a strong presence in Italy.
In the letter, Wizz Air said it has never partaken in any “anti-union conduct” in Italy or elsewhere. The company has been at odds with various labor unions numerous times, although the latest clash in Italy has been exceptionally heated
