Strong wind speeds on December 15, 2021 brought massive flight delays and cancellations at Denver International Airport (DEN).
The National Weather Service warned that wind gusts of up to 105 mph may cause havoc and travel delays as power outages took place around Colorado, closing highways and roads.
DEN airport itself experienced high winds of over 60 mph. This caused the airport to close four out of its six runways. According to FlightAware, a site that tracks flight delays and cancellations worldwide, DEN had a total of 667 flights delayed and 162 flight cancellations on December 15, 2021. Meanwhile, over 300 flights have been delayed for December 16, 2021 (late evening of December 15, 2021 Denver time).
Majority of the affected flights were from SkyWest (SKYW), Southwest Airlines (LUV), CommutAir, United Airlines and Frontier.

DEN airport recommended that passengers check flight status with their respective airlines before heading to the airport.
The FAA’s current airport status information for DEN states that: Arrival traffic is experiencing airborne delays of 15 minutes or less.
