Learjet crashes in San Diego, cuts power to neighborhood
A ten-seat Learjet 35A business jet has crashed in the middle of the street in the Bostonia neighborhood, San Diego, United States.
The aircraft damaged one house and was completely destroyed, with the remains catching fire, which was promptly put out by firefighters.
According to local media reports, no survivor has been found. No people on the ground were harmed, but the number of passengers who traveled aboard the jet – and the total number of casualties – remains unknown.
According to the Times of San Diego, the crash was reported on December 27, 2021, at 7:15 pm local time (December 28, 3:15 UTC). Several houses in the vicinity of the crash were immediately evacuated, but the residents were allowed to return home soon.
On its way down the aircraft toppled several power line poles, cutting power to as many as 2,000 residents. While some lines were restored, several hundreds of residents were still without power by the early morning of December 28, 2021.
The crash happened just several miles away from Gillespie Field Airport (GEE). The aircraft took off from John Wayne Airport (SNA) at 6:56 pm PST (2:56 UTC) and was scheduled to land at GEE.
While some reports indicate that the aircraft may have hit power lines during the landing approach, an unconfirmed security camera footage, published by Fox 5 San Diego, shows the airplane banking left and diving down during its approach.
