Memorial day weekend travel plans have been beset by disruption with thousands of US flights canceled and delayed.

During May 29, 2022 alone, there were a total of 4,798 flight delays within, into, or out of the United States, and a total of 541 flight cancellations, according to flight tracking site FlightAware.

Based on FlightAware’s data, Delta, American Airlines (A1G) (AAL), United Airlines and JetBlue (JBLU) experienced the greatest number of flight disruptions.

On May 28, 2022, Delta Airlines (DAL) canceled the most flights, with more than 250 cancellations.

Bad weather and “air-traffic control actions” were the cause of the cancellations, Delta said in an email to the Associated Press.

Delta Airlines (DAL) also recently announced that it will “strategically decrease” its flight schedule for the summer of 2022 as it looks to improve operations.

Weather and air traffic control, vendor staffing and increased COVID-19 cases are some of the factors cited by the airline as reasons for decrease in scheduled flights. From July 1, 2022 through August 7,2022, the airline said it would cut around 100 daily flights primarily in the US and on Latin America routes.
