Icelandair to expand Boeing 737 MAX fleet with four additional aircraft
Iceland’s flag carrier Icelandair has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) for the purchase of four additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft with the aim of expanding its current fleet.
The four Boeing 737 MAX jets were built in 2018 and are expected to join the carrier in the autumn of 2022.
The agreement, which was announced on June 16, 2022, will bring the total number of 737 MAX in Icelandair's fleet to 18 aircraft.
“We are pleased to announce a further expansion to our fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft on favorable terms. The MAX has proven to be a good fit to our route network and its fuel efficiency contributes positively to our efforts of reducing the carbon emissions from our operations,” said Bogi Nils Bogason, Icelandair CEO.
Bogason hopes that the order will help the airline ramp-up its operations and expand its route network between various destinations across Europe and North America.
“This summer we offer direct flights from Iceland to 44 destinations, up to five times a day. This addition to our fleet allows us to further increase our services by adding new destinations and increasing frequency to our current destinations,” Bogason explained.
According to Planespotters.com data, Icelandair currently operates a fleet of 41 planes, consisting of five De Havilland Canada DHC-8 Dash 8 turboprop regional airliners, three Boeing 767-300s, and 21 Boeing 757 family jets, and 14 Boeing 737 MAX planes.
