A passenger who went on a rampage at Palma de Mallorca airport (PMI) has been arrested after assaulting a Ryaniar employee and causing wreckage and considerable damage at the gate.

Airport security received an alarm call from the airport’s gate C-62 at approximately 05:43 local time on September 21, 2023. It appears that the assailant had missed his flight to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Airport (LPA).

Video footage of the incident is circulating on social media in which a topless man can be seen hurling pieces of airport gate equipment as a uniformed person, presumably a member of staff, runs away from him.

Subsequent clips show the extent of the damage that the man caused at the gate, with computer equipment, scanners and various devices seen damaged and strewn all over the area.

The man reportedly assaulted a Ryannair employee in the midst of his rage, before going into the women’s toilets, taking a broken piece of glass and cutting himself on the chest and abdomen, threatening to take his own life.

Six guards who responded to the alarm call eventually managed to restrain the passenger until the Spanish Guardia Civil arrived.

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment, and is now a detainee inside a Palma police headquarters.
