Norwegian reopened its base at Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN) on May 1, 2023.

Back in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic and the carrier’s financial difficulties forced a retrenchment of its operations and the closure of its Barcelona base. However, the city retained one of the airline’s administrative offices and some routes to and from its Scandinavian core markets.

For the time being, this Barcelona base is going to be seasonal, with two Boeing 737-800 and 65 crew members based there between the months of May and October.

The network out of Barcelona spans eight destinations in four different countries: Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger in Norway, Copenhagen and Aalborg in Denmark, Stockholm and Goteborg in Sweden and Helsinki, Finland.

Although a sign of Norwegian’s recovery, the base volumes are still well below those of its pre-pandemic peak, when the airline operated a total of five Boeing 737s and four B787s out of the Catalan capital to a whole range of destinations across Europe and North America.

Norwegian has two other bases in Spain, in Alicante (ALC) and Malaga (AGP).
