A man and a teenager have been charged by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) after the teen hopped on a baggage carousel at Canberra Airport on July 2, 2023.

In a statement the AFP said that the adult had allegedly encouraged the 14-year-old to enter a restricted area of the airport by riding a baggage carousel.

The incident was captured on the airport’s CCTV cameras, where two men can be seen filming the teenager as he hopped on the baggage carousel.

The AFP said that prior to their scheduled return flight to Queensland, the 58-year old man and teenager were stopped by police. A phone, which allegedly contained footage of the incident, was seized for examination.

“Airport security is no joke and restrictions exist to ensure the safety and security of the traveling public and workers,” Detective Acting Inspector Jon Horrocks said in a statement.

“Canberra Airport Group, the AFP and industry partners take any security breaches at airports seriously and people can be prosecuted if they commit a criminal offense,” Horrocks added.

The AFP said that the man and the teeanger have been charged with entering a security restricted area at a designated airport through access control points which is contrary to regulation 3.16B of the Aviation Transport Security Regulations 2005.

The man is scheduled to appear before Australian Capital Territory (ACT) magistrates court on October 3, 2023.
