Turkey is evaluating the deployment of F-16 fighter jets to Northern Cyprus as part of a broader set of security measures amid escalating military activity across the Eastern Mediterranean region, according to sources within the Turkish Ministry of National Defense.
According to the ministry, several security measures are currently being evaluated to strengthen the protection of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). One of the options under review is the possible deployment of Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jets to the island.
“Within the scope of the latest developments, gradual plans are being made to ensure the security of the TRNC. The deployment of F-16 aircraft to the island is one of the issues being evaluated,” Turkish media reported on March 7, 2026, citing the Ministry of National Defense.
The discussions come after a recent drone attack targeted the British Royal Air Force (RAF) base at Akrotiri in Cyprus on March 1, 2026. The drone, believed to be of Iranian origin, caused limited damage but increased concerns about regional security.
Officials have not confirmed whether the fighter jets will be deployed. However, local media reports suggest that several Turkish F-16 aircraft could be stationed at Ercan International Airport (ECN) if the situation in the region continues to escalate.
If Turkish F-16 fighters are deployed to Northern Cyprus, it would allow the Turkish Air Force to respond faster to potential threats in the region. For now, Turkish officials say the possible deployment is still under evaluation, and no final decision has been announced.
