Boeing, Anduril interceptor advances in US Army air defense competition

The US Army has selected Boeing to advance to Phase 2 of the Integrated Fires Protection Capability (IFPC) Increment 2 Second Interceptor competition. 

According to Boeing, the midrange missile is intended to protect fixed and forward operating bases from cruise missiles, militarized drones, and related aerial threats. 

Phase 2 includes detailed design, system development, integration and demonstration work, as well as a competitive capability demonstration to validate performance against US Army requirements. The company has not disclosed the value of the award or a date for the demonstration. 

Boeing pairs its seeker with Anduril rocket motor 

Boeing highlighted that its interceptor combines the company’s seeker technology with a compact airframe, a solid rocket motor from Anduril Rocket Motor Systems and a Modular Open Systems Architecture (MOSA). 

The MOSA is intended to enable components such as the seeker, avionics, or software to be changed without redesigning the entire weapon. Boeing also said that the compact design would allow more interceptors to be carried in each magazine, increasing the number of engagements available before a launcher must be reloaded. 

In a separate statement, Anduril highlighted the production infrastructure behind its contribution. Its Mississippi Solid Rocket Motor Complex was designed to support programs including IFPC Increment 2. 

The company claims to have built the 182-hectare (450-acre) site with more than $100 million of its own capital and $58 million in Defense Production Act funding. Anduril also noted that consolidation has left the US solid rocket motor market with two suppliers. 

Reducing the cost of interceptor propulsion is also a focus of the US Army’s separate xTech Apex Intercept prize competition, launched on July 7, 2026, which includes a category for low-cost solid rocket motors. 

Boeing faces competition for the second IFPC interceptor 

Boeing received an Other Transaction Authority (OTA) project agreement to develop its interceptor on December 5, 2025, and announced its partnership with Anduril on December 18, 2025. 

Lockheed Martin, working with AeroVironment, announced its own OTA project agreement for the program on October 16, 2025. Rafael Systems Global Sustainment, the US subsidiary of Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, stated in February 2026 that it had also been selected for Phase 1. 

As of September 10, 2026, neither Lockheed Martin nor Rafael had publicly stated whether any other competitors had advanced to Phase 2.
