Auckland Airport (AKL)

Auckland Airport (AKL) is New Zealand's connection to the world compressed into a single runway: around 19 million passengers a year, roughly three-quarters of the country's international arrivals, operating from a site on the Manukau Harbour 21 kilometers south of the city. Opened in 1966, it is the home of Air New Zealand and the departure point for some of the longest flights in commercial aviation, including nonstops to New York and Chicago.

The airport is mid-way through the largest infrastructure program in New Zealand's aviation history: a multibillion-dollar rebuild combining the domestic jet operation into an integrated terminal with the international building, replacing 1960s-era infrastructure that the listed airport company and its airline customers have publicly fought over the cost of. One runway, one integrated terminal, one country's gateway: few major airports carry so much on so little concrete.

Terminals & infrastructure

The International and Domestic terminals sit a walk apart today, with the airport's flagship project combining domestic jet flying into an expanded integrated terminal, the centerpiece of a multibillion-dollar rebuild whose charges Air New Zealand and other carriers have publicly contested. The single runway handles everything from turboprops to the ultra-long-haul departures that make Auckland one of the longest-range airports on Earth.
