Shanghai Pudong International (PVG) is mainland China's gateway to the world: 85.0 million passengers in 2025 made it the country's busiest airport and the fifth-busiest on Earth, with over 35 million of them international, roughly half its traffic, a share no other mainland hub approaches. Built on reclaimed coastal land 30 kilometers east of the city and opened in 1999, it pairs with downtown Hongqiao to give Shanghai a two-airport system moving well over 130 million passengers a year.
Pudong is home to China Eastern and its Shanghai Airlines subsidiary, the world's second-busiest cargo airport, and a construction site for the next scale-up: the fourth-phase expansion, centered on a Terminal 3 designed for 50 million passengers, targets 130 million annual passengers at Pudong alone by 2030.
