Zayed International Airport is the gateway to the UAE capital and the home of Etihad Airways, transformed in November 2023 by the opening of Terminal A, a 742,000 square meter showpiece with capacity for 45 million passengers that replaced the airport's outgrown older facilities overnight. It was renamed from Abu Dhabi International in honor of Sheikh Zayed in 2024.
Traffic is climbing steeply, from 29.4 million passengers in 2024 toward the capacity Etihad's Journey 2030 doubling will demand, as the airport positions itself as the calmer alternative to Dubai 100 km up the coast, with stopover programmes, a growing route map and Abu Dhabi's cultural district as draws.
