A missile was fired off from a Chadian attack aircraft as it was preparing for takeoff. The ordnance hit a house near the base, killing at least five civilians.
The incident happened at the Adji Kossei airbase, bordering N’Djamena International Airport (NDJ), in the capital city of Chad, on April 17, 2020. The aircraft involved appears to be a Su-25 of the Chadian Air Force.
After going through a fuel truck belonging to the French army, also operating from the airbase in the anti-jihadist Operation Barkhane, the missile hit a nearby house belonging to a senior Chadian officer. According to local news, the explosion killed five people, including three children.
While early reports indicate it was a firing incident, the reason behind this tragic accident is unclear. “An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of this incident,” said Youssouf Tom, public prosecutor at N’Djamena.
