Wizz Air has revealed when and where its newest subsidiary, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, will fly to, as the airline aims to expand in the Middle Eastern market.
The Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH)-based airline will operate with two Airbus A321neo aircraft stationed at the airport. The low-cost carrier will officially start flying from AUH on October 1, 2020, read a statement by Wizz Air.
Initially, the Abu Dhabi subsidiary’s destination network will span Borg El Arab International Airport (HBE) in Egypt, Athens International Airport (ATH) in Greece, Kutaisi International Airport (KUT) in Sakartvelo, Larnaca International Airport (LCA) in Cyprus, Odessa International Airport (ODS) in Ukraine, and Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) in Yerevan, Armenia.
A further four A321neos are set to join the Abu Dhabi base throughout six months after the airline kicks off operations on October 1, 2020.
“This announcement is the first step of a long and much-awaited journey as we are dedicated to developing our presence in Abu Dhabi, contributing to Abu Dhabi’s economic diversity strategy while offering ever more affordable travel opportunities on our low fare network,” stated the chief executive officer (CEO) of Wizz Air József Váradi.
The newly-established Wizz Air subsidiary will compete against another new low-cost carrier in Abu Dhabi, Air Arabia Abu Dhabi. Established jointly by Air Arabia and Etihad, the airline is set to start its operations on July 14, 2020. The two airlines will share a common destination from AUH to HBE. However, Air Arabia Abu Dhabi’s only other destination is also in Egypt, namely Sohag International Airport (HMB).
