AirAsia Japan abolishes all routes, 23K passengers get no refund

Affected by the outbreak of new coronavirus disease, AirAsia Japan, the low-cost airline under the well-known AirAsia group, abolished all its routes on the 5th and officially withdrew from the Japanese market. As AirAsia Japan abandons its business, about 23,000 consumers will not get refunds on their tickets.

According to Kyodo News, the number of AirAsia Japan passengers shrank significantly due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In response to the deterioration of the company’s operation caused by the global pandemic, the company announced in October that it would give up its business and abolish all routes on December 5.

Earlier in November, AirAsia Japan applied to the Tokyo District Court to start bankruptcy procedures and received an order prohibiting property disposal.

AirAsia Japan is based in the Chubu Centrair International Airport. Its three domestic routes to Sapporo, Sendai and Fukuoka, and one international route to Taipei were officially abolished on Saturday (December 5). Some media pointed out that with the abandonment of Air Asia Japan business, about 23000 consumers will not get their tickets refunded. The value of tickets mentioned above is worth about 520 million yen (about 5 million USD).
