Turkish flag carrier Turkish Airlines has canceled 100 passenger flights scheduled to take-off from Istanbul in Turkey as the Marmara region continues to face heavy snowfall.
On March 18, 2022, Turkey’s largest airline informed its passengers about the flight cancellations from its bases at Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) due to challenging weather conditions.
“Due to severe weather conditions expected in İstanbul, some of our flights from/to the İstanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen Airport scheduled to operate on March 18 and March 19, 2022, are being canceled,” the carrier announced in a statement on its official website
“To check the status of your flight and learn about your rights regarding your flights, please visit the flight status page and enter your flight number or your route,” the company added.
The decision was made following the latest warning from the Turkish State Meteorological Service, which stated that the Marmara region will face a new cold front, resulting in heavy rainfall combined with a wave of snowfall beginning March 18, 2022. Meteorologists also issued a yellow alert, warning of a potential threat caused by the uncommon weather event across the region.
The cancelations will affect 100 scheduled Turkish Airlines passenger flights, including 80 services out of IST airport as well as the remaining 20 out of SAW airport.
Heavy snowfall has already disrupted daily life across Turkey for four days between March 10 and March 14, 2022.
