UK’s Doncaster Sheffield Airport to ‘wind down’ operations from October
Operations at Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) in South Yorkshire, United Kingdom, will begin to “wind down” from October 31, 2022, the airport’s owner Peel Group has announced.
The airport is set to close permanently by the end of the year and will impact at least 800 direct and 2,700 indirect jobs.
Robert Hough, chairman of Peel Airports Group said: "We recognise that this will come as a great disappointment to many. The intractable problem remains the fundamental and insufficient lack of current or prospective revenue streams, together with the airport’s high operating costs.”
"Regretfully, no tangible proposals have been received regarding the ownership of the airport or which address the fundamental lack of financial viability. The high fixed costs associated with running a safe, regulated airport, together with recent events materially reducing prospective future aviation income streams, mean that a break-even business plan cannot be identified for the foreseeable future,” a statement from Peel Group, which was seen by Doncaster Free Press, reads.
Peel Group added that despite active efforts to engage with local and national political stakeholders, none of these discussions have delivered “any tangible results that have changed the board of DSA or Peel’s clear view that the airport is and will remain unviable.”
Although Doncaster Sheffield Airport was one of the UK's fastest growing airports for two years between 2015 and 2017, Peel Group said, just one British leisure charter airline TUI is currently based in the area.
Doncaster Sheffield Airport opened in 2005.
