Two Airlink Embraer E-Jets performed a low formation flypast over DHL Stadium in Cape Town, South Africa, prompting widespread discussion about the safety of the operation after video footage of the pass appeared online.

The flypast took place shortly before the South Africa-New Zealand rugby Test match on August 29, 2026, which was attended by more than 56,000 spectators. The aircraft were an Embraer E195, registered ZS-YDE, and an Embraer E190, registered ZS-YAE.

Flight tracking data indicates that the aircraft passed approximately 41 and 46 feet (12.5 and 14 meters) above the stadium roof. The calculation takes into account the aircraft’s recorded altitude, local atmospheric pressure, and the height of the stadium.

The low clearance was particularly noticeable in videos recorded from inside and around the venue. Some footage also appears to show the aircraft passing through or very close to pyrotechnic effects released from the stadium. However, there has been no confirmed report that either aircraft was struck by the pyrotechnics.

Airlink said the flypast was a planned and rehearsed operation, rather than an unscheduled low-level maneuver.

According to the airline, the aircraft flew at approximately 150 knots following extensive preparation. Airlink said the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and Air Traffic Navigation Services (ATNS) provided guidance, approval and support for the operation.

The airline also said both aircraft were operated by highly experienced crews. Each aircraft had three senior captains serving as captain, co-pilot and safety/technical officer. Airlink said flight-data records confirmed that both aircraft remained within the altitude and speed limits approved for the flypast.

The operation formed part of Airlink’s involvement in Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, the series of matches between South Africa and New Zealand. Airlink is the official domestic airline partner for the 2026 tour and is transporting the teams and their support staff between match locations.

While stadium flypasts involving passenger aircraft are not unusual, the combination of formation flying and the very low altitude made the Cape Town operation particularly notable.

Based on the available flight tracking data and Airlink‘s statement, the aircraft were operating under a specific flight profile that had been planned and approved for the event. The visual appearance of the aircraft flying close to the stadium roof does not, on its own, establish that the operation breached aviation regulations.
