American Airlines will become the only carrier in the United States (US) to fly non-stop between New York and Tokyo.
American Airlines announced that from June 28, 2024, it will launch a daily service between John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND).
The move comes after the US Department of Transportation (DoT) formally approved American Airlines application and granted the carrier slots.
According to One Mile at a Time, All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines are the only airlines currently flying between JFK and HND, while United Airlines flies from Newark and Tokyo twice a day.
American Airlines was keen to state that the new route will compliment rather than rival Japan Airlines existing setup between the two major international cities.
“American looks forward to launching flights between JFK and HND this summer,” Brian Znotins, American’s Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning, said. “This new service will complement flights offered by our joint business partner, Japan Airlines, giving more ways for our customers travel between the U.S. and Japan.”
The new JFK and HND service will be American’s fourth daily nonstop flight to HND, joining existing daily service from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and two daily flights from Los Angeles (LAX).
Flights on a Boeing 777-200 will leave JFK at 11.25 am local time and arrive at HND at 2:30 pm the following day, while the return flight will leave at 4:30 pm local time and arrive back in the US at 4.35 pm.
Tickets are available for the service from February 26, 2024.
