The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) issued its official statement regarding the impact of escalating global conflicts on airline operations, emphasizing the need for government support if the situation persists.

In recent years, rising global conflicts have significantly reduced the availability of safe airspace for airline operations, increasing potential safety risks to civil aircraft operating in or near conflict-affected airspace. AAPA said that the escalation of hostilities since February 28, 2026, has further strained airlines’ operational risks and costs, particularly along the Asia-Europe air corridor, where safe pathways are constrained by conflicts in the Middle East, Russia, Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

According to AAPA, airlines are facing higher jet fuel prices, insurance premiums, and increased operating costs due to longer flight routings. To ensure the safety of flight crews and passengers, airlines rely on timely intelligence, robust risk assessments, and clear, state-issued airspace information when operating near conflict-affected regions.

“If the hostilities persist, governments should consider measures to support the industry in mitigating operational challenges and maintaining global air connectivity, which remains vital to economic activity and social wellbeing,” AAPA said.

AAPA said that governments can provide assistance by offering timely threat information, maintaining clear and responsive airspace restrictions, facilitating coordinated repatriation arrangements, and considering measures to alleviate extraordinary operational costs if the situation is prolonged.

The association also highlighted the importance of government-industry collaboration and mutual support, which have been crucial in managing airline operations during previous crises, such as the September 11 attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the global community continues to navigate these difficult times, AAPA has emphasized the need for all stakeholders to work together to ensure the safety and sustainability of the airline industry, which plays a vital role in connecting people and economies around the world.
