Australia has opened a new AUD 200 million (US $130 million) facility at the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Edinburgh in South Australia. It is set to serve as a regional hub for the maintenance and sustainment of P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.
The Deep Maintenance Modification Facility, officially opened on May 22, 2026, has been designed to bring long-term maintenance and upgrade work for the RAAF’s Poseidon fleet onto home soil, reducing the country’s reliance on overseas sustainment.
A boost for sovereign capability
Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles remarked that the facility reflects the government’s priorities under the 2026 National Defence Strategy and the Integrated Investment Program, describing it as a critical investment in Australia’s ability to maintain key defense capabilities domestically.
Marles argued that embedding deep maintenance work for the P-8A fleet in Australia strengthens sovereign capability, improves force readiness, and aligns with the strategic direction set out in the National Defence Strategy.
The P-8A Poseidon is central to Australia’s airborne anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and search-and-rescue operations. It also delivers maritime and overland intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

Jobs and industry
Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy said that the facility represents more than just infrastructure, calling it a substantial boost for Australian industry and workers.
Conroy emphasized that the project is about Australian skills and Australian jobs supporting national defense, reinforcing the role of the domestic industrial base in sustaining critical military capabilities.
Regional partnerships
Beyond supporting the Australian fleet, the facility will also serve as a maintenance hub for regional partners.
In a significant step for defense cooperation, the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) will begin conducting deep maintenance for its own P-8A Poseidon aircraft at the South Australian facility starting in 2028.
The arrangement reinforces the longstanding defense relationship between Australia and New Zealand, supporting shared commitments to regional security and maritime capability.
