British Airways has selected Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engines to power its next round of Airbus A320neo aircraft, covering 33 firm orders and 30 additional options. 

The engine maker announced the deal on July 20, 2026, the opening day of the Farnborough International Airshow.

The deal, between RTX’s Pratt & Whitney and the UK’s flag carrier, also includes a 12-year maintenance agreement under Pratt & Whitney’s EngineWise Comprehensive program, meant to keep the fleet running efficiently and hold down long-term ownership costs. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027.

Rick Deurloo, President of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney, called the agreement “a strong vote of confidence in the GTF engine,” noting that British Airways joining as a customer marks a significant moment for the program. 

He added that the GTF is “the most fuel-efficient choice for the A320neo aircraft,” positioning it to support the airline’s international fleet expansion while improving the experience for passengers on board.

That efficiency argument centers on the GTF’s geared architecture, which Pratt & Whitney says delivers 20% lower fuel burn and a 75% smaller noise footprint compared to the previous generation of engines. 

More than 2,800 GTF-powered aircraft are currently flying worldwide across over 90 airlines, and the engine’s order backlog has grown past 8,000 units, a sign of sustained demand across the industry.

Pratt & Whitney is also preparing to roll out an upgraded version, the GTF Advantage, later this year. The company says that variant will offer up to twice the time between engine overhauls, along with further gains in fuel efficiency and range.

The agreement adds British Airways to a growing list of carriers backing the GTF platform as airlines across the industry look to modernize their narrowbody fleets with more fuel-efficient options.
