Emirates announced it is rolling out a new headrest design for its economy class passengers, becoming the first airline in the world to introduce the feature as part of a broader push to improve comfort in its lowest cabin class.
Called the U-Dream, the multi-way adjustable headrest is built to support the head and neck during sleep or rest, and is being installed across Emirates’ economy class seats on all A350 aircraft and most of its Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s.
The rollout, backed by significant investment from the airline, is already underway.
How U-Dream design works
The U-Dream is part of the Z400 seat developed by Safran Seats, and features a padded leather headrest with flexible side wings that fold inward to cradle the head and neck. That design is meant to keep a passenger’s head from slipping forward or to the side during sleep, without requiring a separate neck pillow.

The headrest also moves vertically and tilts, allowing it to adjust to passengers of different heights and body types. Emirates says the design has been independently tested and verified against the safety standards set by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.
Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, said the airline “never rests on its laurels when it comes to customer experience,” and that it had found a way to significantly improve comfort for Economy Class passengers, particularly on long-haul flights. He described the U-Dream as changing the game for passengers who want to sleep, saying it supports the neck fully enough that “no more neck pillows” are needed, and called it further proof of the airline’s commitment to making its Economy Class “the best.”
Rollout across the fleet
The headrest is already flying on three Emirates A350 aircraft, with installation continuing as quickly as possible.
In partnership with Safran Seats, Emirates expects the U-Dream to be installed across its entire A350 fleet by the end of the year.
The feature will also come pre-installed on all 270 Boeing 777X aircraft Emirates has on order. Starting in 2027, the airline plans to extend installation to its retrofitted Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s as well, folding the new headrest into its ongoing cabin overhaul program.
Emirates says early feedback from passengers has been positive, with customers finding the headrest simple to adjust. Cabin crew have also been trained to help travelers use it if needed, and the leather design is wiped down and cleaned after every flight.
