Iberia operated the first revenue service across the Atlantic using its new Airbus A321XLR aircraft on November 14, 2024.

Iberia flight IB347 departed Madrid-Barajas (MAD) at 13.00 local time bound for Boston-Logan (BOS), where it landed at 14.34 local time.

This first A321XLR, registered as EC-OIL, was presented to the media during an event at Iberia’s La Muñoza facilities near Madrid-Barajas Airport on November 13, 2024.

In early November 2024, passengers on flights between Madrid and Paris (CDG) and Barcelona (BCN) were able to experience the two-class A321XLR cabin ahead of its official presentation when Iberia performed crew familiarization flights within Europe.

Iberia plans to deploy its A321XLRs on routes across the Atlantic, the primary mission for which this aircraft was designed. In addition to Boston, the Spanish airline plans to launch A321XLR services to Washington-Dulles (IAD) as soon as it receives the second aircraft of the type in early 2025.

  1. When United Airlines starts taking A321XLRs in 2026, it could upgrade its IAD-MAD seasonal flights to year-round service.
