Mexico City International Airport (MEX) was forced to suspend flights after heavy rainfall in the area led to poor visibility and floods.

Airport management issued a statement on August 10, 2025, confirming that aviation authorities had “ordered the suspension of landing and takeoff operations for the next 3 hours”.

“This will allow for the removal of rainwater that has caused flooding, enabling the restoration of operational capacity,” the airport said.

According to the airport heavy rain fell during the afternoon and the suspension was ordered to “ensure operational safety”.

At one stage Flightradar24 reported 66 diverted flights during the closure with several airlines caught up in the disruptions.

An American Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) was diverted to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), while an Aeromexico 737 MAX 9 from Orlando Airport (MCO) was diverted to Cancun Airport (CUN).

Mexico City Airport advised passengers to stay in contact with their designated airline for updates.

Overnight operations appeared to have returned to normal with aircraft beginning to land and takeoff from the airport.

Local media reported rainfall reaching up to 50 centimeters in parts of Mexico City and a purple alert was issued to inhabitants, the highest warning level.
