Philippine Airlines (PAL) has signed an agreement with GE Aerospace for GEnx-1B engines to power its incoming fleet of 15 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, along with purchase rights for five additional aircraft.
The deal was formalized at a signing ceremony during the Farnborough International Airshow on July 20, 2026, led by Lucio C. Tan III, President and Chief Operating Officer of PAL Holdings, Richard Nuttall, President of Philippine Airlines, and senior GE Aerospace executives.
The GEnx-1B, built by GE Aerospace, a global aerospace propulsion and services company with tens of thousands of engines in service worldwide, is designed to deliver a combination of efficiency, reliability, and lower emissions through advanced materials and design, supporting quieter, more sustainable long-haul flying.
Tan said GE Aerospace remains an important partner as the airline continues investing in its fleet and expanding internationally, adding that the GEnx engines should provide the reliability, efficiency, and performance needed to support operations and improve the travel experience for customers.
Mohamed Ali, President and CEO of GE Aerospace Commercial Engines & Services, said the selection builds on a long-standing relationship with PAL and reflects the strength of the company’s technology and support, noting GE Aerospace’s pride in supporting PAL’s widebody fleet growth with an engine built for reliability and fuel efficiency.
PAL said it expects delivery of the 787-10 aircraft between 2031 and 2034.
Behind the engine deal: PAL’s Boeing 787-10 order
The engine agreement follows Philippine Airlines’ confirmation, also announced at Farnborough on July 20, 2026 of a new order with Boeing for the 787-10 Dreamliner, ending months of speculation about the carrier’s next widebody purchase.
Executives from both companies signed the agreement in front of media, with Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg and William Kimmitt, the US Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, among those in attendance.
Under the deal, Philippine Airlines placed a firm order for 15 787-10 Dreamliners, with the option for five more at a later date. Ahead of the airshow, reports had suggested the 85-year-old carrier was close to finalizing a purchase of 15 Boeing 787-10s alongside nine Airbus A350-1000 aircraft.
Tan said the 787-10 will strengthen PAL’s medium and long-haul fleet, allowing the airline to offer a better travel experience while improving operational efficiency and supporting its sustainability goals. Philippine Airlines has not previously flown the 787 Dreamliner, though its relationship with Boeing stretches back more than 80 years. The carrier currently operates a fleet of 777-300ERs, with the new 787-10s scheduled to begin arriving in 2031.
