Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), the flag carrier of Scandinavia, has signed an Alliance Adherence Agreement (AAA) with SkyTeam Alliance.

As a result, SAS will leave Star Alliance, of which it was a founding member in 1997. The agreement will take effect from September 1, 2024, and is expected to offer several advantages to travelers.

It will expand SkyTeam’s network of airlines and destinations and provide SAS customers with enhanced connectivity and access to previously unserved destinations. Additionally, EuroBonus members will have the opportunity to earn and redeem points across the alliance, while Gold and Diamond members will receive exclusive privileges like SkyPriority services and lounge access.

The decision for SAS to leave Star Alliance and join SkyTeam stems from its burgeoning relationship with Air France-KLM Group, a fellow SkyTeam member. This strategic alignment, which began in October 2023, should see the Franco-Dutch group eventually become a shareholder of the Scandinavian career.
