Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) announced that EgyptAir will join its airline network, with the Egyptian flag carrier planning to launch a new service connecting Cairo, Singapore, and Sydney from 2027.
The route, announced on September 9, 2026, during the El Alamein Air Show in Egypt, will mark the first direct link between Sydney and Cairo, subject to regulatory approvals.
The addition brings Sydney Airport’s total to a record 54 airlines, reinforcing its position as Australia’s largest international gateway, and creating a new air link between Australia and Egypt.
A new gateway to Africa, Europe, and the Middle East
The route will give passengers a more direct way to reach Cairo, along with onward connections across Egypt, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East through EgyptAir’s global network.
Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton said that the deal is about more than just a new destination.
According to Charlton, the service delivers greater choice for passengers and unlocks new opportunities for tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between Australia, Egypt, and the wider region.
He described the addition as a major milestone for the airport’s international network and a big step forward in improving connectivity to what remains the largest unserved African market for Australian travelers.
An important market for the Egyptian community
The new service also carries a strong community dimension. New South Wales is home to Australia’s largest Egyptian community, with more than 21,000 people of Egyptian heritage living in the state.
The new route is expected to make it significantly easier for that community to travel between the two countries.
Captain Ahmed Adel, Chairman and CEO of EgyptAir, said the partnership with Sydney Airport marks an important step in expanding the airline’s international network and strengthening links between Egypt, Singapore, and Australia.
He noted that the new service is designed to support growing demand for tourism, business, education, and visits between friends and relatives, adding that EgyptAir looks forward to welcoming passengers and building stronger connections between Egypt and Sydney.
