A United Parcel Service (UPS) Boeing B747-8F freighter has experienced an engine pod strike while attempting to land at Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport (TPE).

The incident occurred on August 13, 2025. The freighter, with registration N613UP, was operating as flight 5X-61 from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), and was on its third landing attempt at TPE Airport’s runway 05L.

Tropical typhoon Podul was blowing through Taiwan at the time of the incident, with wind speeds of up to 191 kph being reported.

Video footage of the incident captured the moment the aircraft’s right wing lowered as it touched down, causing engine #4 nacelle to strike the runway ground, emitting sparks as the aircraft eventually found its balance.

The aircraft managed to complete its landing without further incident, or any reported injuries.

Photos of engine #4’s sustained damage were captured after the aircraft landed. Investigations on the incident are now underway.

  1. It takes only an 8 deg bank to get a pod strike on landing. The bottom of each engine nacelle has a drain mast that protrudes several inches. Part of the pre flight is to check that all are undamaged!
