The wingtips of a GoJet plane and SkyWest plane collided while both aircraft waited on the tarmac for gates at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) on the evening of December 5, 2023.

The SkyWest aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ-700 under flight 5433 (operating as United Express), was taxiing to its gate when its wingtip made contact with a GoJet aircraft, also a CRJ-700 under flight 4423, at about 19:00 local time.

No injuries were reported, and the planes both made it to their respective gates and were able to deplane passengers as normal.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident.

In October 2023, a SkyWest aircraft on the same flight number was also involved in a collision at ORD airport. It was one of two planes struck by a baggage cart on the runway.

Wingtip collisions are common at busy airports. It is usually caused by miscalculation when maneuvering aircraft, darkness and miscommunications between pilots and ramp control.
