Su-57

The Sukhoi Su-57 is Russia's fifth-generation fighter, developed under the PAK FA program launched in 2002 and first flown on January 29, 2010. It entered Russian service in 2020 after a development marked by the loss of the first production aircraft in 2019, and 76 are on order for the Russian Aerospace Forces by 2028, with about 40 believed delivered as of mid-2026 including test aircraft, per open-source counts.

Algeria's receipt of its first two Su-57Es in late 2025, from an order of about 14, turned the type into the first stealth fighter other than the F-35 ever exported. The aircraft has flown combat missions in the war against Ukraine, principally launching stand-off missiles from Russian airspace, a employment profile that reflects both its numbers and Russian loss aversion; a two-seat Su-57D first flew in May 2026.

The programme covers Russia's domestic Su-57 and the Su-57E export version, with a two-seat Su-57D in development.

Slow production has been the programme's defining constraint, with roughly 16 aircraft a year targeted from Komsomolsk-on-Amur, but Algeria's deliveries made the Su-57 the first stealth fighter other than the F-35 ever exported.
