IndiGo has become the first airline to land at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) as staff conducted the opening flight validation test.

The IndiGo Airbus A320 touched down at India’s newest airport on December 29, 2024, as part of NMI gaining its aerodrome license clearance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

“This is a momentous day for Navi Mumbai International Airport. The successful completion of the validation flight is a major milestone, and we are now one step closer to operationalising the airport, prioritising safety at every step,” said Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings.

Among those that witnessed the landing were representatives from the DGCA, Airports Authority of India (AAI), Central Industrial Security Force and the India Meteorological Department.

The IndiGo Airbus A320 was welcomed with a water canon salute and the carrier posted a message of support for the ambitious new airport.

“Proud to be the first airline to land at the brand-new Navi Mumbai International Airport, marking a historic milestone towards its operational readiness. Here’s to new beginnings,” said IndiGo in a social media post.

Navi Mumbai International Airport will become Mumbai’s second aviation hub alongside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM).

The new airport is due to open in April 2025, and at full capacity will serve more than 90 million passengers per year.
