The Gulfstream G400 flies 4,200 nautical miles nonstop, covering the US coast-to-coast mission and transatlantic crossings such as New York to London, and is the smallest of Gulfstream's new-generation family. The aircraft first flew in August 2024, and certification work continues with an entry-into-service date the manufacturer has not yet announced.

The G400 brings the Symmetry flight deck and the wide G500-derived cabin cross-section into the large-cabin entry class, a segment Gulfstream left when the G450 ended production in 2018. The company is betting that operators of aging mid-size fleets will pay a premium, list price around $34.5 million, for a cabin and cockpit shared with jets three classes above.

Market position

The G400 re-enters a class Gulfstream abandoned, competing with the Challenger 3500 and the top of the Praetor line, and its pitch is simple: the only entry-level large-cabin jet with a flagship cockpit. As Gulfstream looks to pull super-midsize owners up into its family, the G400's shared type-rating path toward the G500 and G600 is the strategic point of the airplane, more than any single specification.

Gulfstream Aerospace, the Savannah, Georgia-based business jet unit of General Dynamics, has been building large-cabin jets since the Gulfstream II of 1966 and delivers from final assembly lines in Savannah and Appleton, Wisconsin.

Frequently asked questions

When will the Gulfstream G400 enter service?

Gulfstream has not committed to a date. The G400 first flew in August 2024 and remains in flight testing, with a longer certification campaign than recent Gulfstream programmes.

What is the range of the Gulfstream G400?

4,200 nautical miles at Mach 0.85, with a planned maximum operating speed of Mach 0.90.

Why is the G400's certification taking longer?

It is the first application of the Pratt & Whitney PW812GA engine on a Gulfstream, and the FAA tightened certification requirements after the Boeing 737 MAX groundings, both of which extend testing.
