Greece is moving ahead with a €3.1 billion program to build a nationwide air and missile defense network using Israeli systems designed to protect against aircraft, drones and missiles.
Known as ‘Achilles Shield,’ the program will combine Israeli air defense systems with capabilities already operated by the Greek Armed Forces. Its main objective is to bring different sensors, interceptors and counter-drone systems into a single network capable of responding to a range of aerial threats.
The network will include several Israeli systems designed to address different types of threats. Rafael’s SPYDER will protect against aircraft, helicopters, drones, and other low-level targets, while Israel Aerospace Industries’ Barak MX is designed to intercept aircraft and missiles. David’s Sling, developed by Rafael, will add another layer against heavier threats such as ballistic and cruise missiles.
Greek officials say data from radars and other sensors will be shared across the network to identify incoming threats and determine which defensive system should respond.
Greece already operates U.S.-made Patriot systems, which will also form part of the wider air-defense architecture.
The program was approved by Greece in July as part of a wider €4.2 billion package covering 11 defense procurement programs. The air defense component accounts for about €3.1 billion of the total.
The package also includes three Embraer C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft, additional unmanned systems and other defense equipment. The C-390 acquisition is worth approximately €600 million.
Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias said the complete air-defense system is expected to become operational within 35 months after the contracts take effect, with the systems delivered in stages.
Greece and Israel are scheduled to sign the agreements in Tel Aviv on August 31, 2026.
