The Dassault Rafale is France's omnirole fighter, the term Dassault uses for an aircraft required to fly air defense, strike, reconnaissance, carrier and nuclear missions in a single sortie, a requirement set by France's 1985 decision to replace seven aircraft types with one. It first flew in 1986 and entered service with the French Navy in 2004.

Egypt's order of February 2015, the type's first export after 20 years of French-only funding, turned the Rafale into Europe's export leader: 533 firm orders by the end of 2025, a backlog of 220 aircraft, and nine export customers, with Indonesian deliveries beginning in January 2026 and 26 aircraft delivered in 2025 as Dassault raises output toward three per month. Ukraine signed a letter of intent for up to 100 aircraft in November 2025.
