International Airlines Group (IAG) announced on March 20, 2018, it is partnering with Honeywell to introduce innovative technology to reduce carbon emissions and boost fuel savings. The airline group is aiming to enhance the efficiency of its entire fleet with the GoDirect Flight Efficiency and GoDirect Fuel Efficiency software.

IAG – the parent company of Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Vueling, and LEVEL – announced in an official press release on March 20, 2018, it will adopt Honeywell’s GoDirect Fuel Efficiency software, which provides data on fuel consumption and aircraft performance.

The goal is to optimize fuel consumption by analyzing flight data and monitoring efficiency initiatives. The airline group states this software is currently being implemented across its airlines´ fleet, which consists of more than 500 aircraft.

IAG’s chief executive Willie Walsh says the company has “a strong track record” in implementing initiatives to reduce its carbon emissions. The Group was able to improve its fuel and carbon efficiency by 2.6 percent in 2017. International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) annual efficiency target is 1.5 percent average improvement.

“We are investing in a modern fleet and developing innovative operating techniques to reduce CO2 output. Producing sustainable fuel is also critical and we continue our work to convert domestic waste into jet fuel which will help to deliver our carbon emissions target while reducing landfill,” Walsh said.

Meanwhile, in a separate press release on March 20, 2018, Honeywell, a Fortune 100 software industrial company, also announced that IAG is implementing the GoDirect Flight Efficiency software across its fleet.

The Group will utilize the Connected Aircraft flight data analytics platform, which uses flight analysis tools to cut carbon emissions, enhance efficiency and reduce fuel costs. The advanced flight data analytics should allow airlines to make data-driven decisions on fuel usage.

"Improving flight efficiency and reducing emissions are among the biggest pressures facing airlines today," said David Shilliday, vice president of Airlines at EMEA, Honeywell Aerospace. "For a business like International Airlines Group, which operates some of the world's leading airlines, this is even more crucial.”

The GoDirect Flight Efficiency solution is a software upgrade that integrates data sources to monitor fuel use and lower aviation’s environmental impact. The software integrates with existing systems to produce more than 100 analysis reports. These reports improve flight-planning capabilities and offer pilots more insight.

According to Honeywell, IAG is the latest in a list of more than 35 customers, including Etihad, Japan Airlines, Turkish Airlines, KLM and Lufthansa, using Honeywell's Flight Efficiency software. However, it is the first airline group to partner with the software company in the development of a central group platform to enable benchmarking across its fleet.
