Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA) prepares for the longest passenger flight in its history. The largest German airline plans to complete one of the most unique flights the company has ever carried out.
Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA) is set to take-off for a 15-hour-long non-stop flight from Hamburg, Germany, to the Falkland Islands. According to the airline‘s statement, 92 passengers, including a group of scientists and the ship crew for the upcoming expedition with Polarstern research vessel, have already booked the flight. The special flight is scheduled to depart on February 1, 2021.
The airline plans to fly an unusual 13,700 kilometers-long route with its Airbus A350-900 aircraft. Before the flight, Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA) had already organized additional training for the pilots via special electronic maps for flight and landing as well as managed the jet fuel available at the Mount Pleasant military base for the return flight.
According to the statement, the Lufthansa Airbus A350 jet is being prepared for the unusual flight in its base in Munich. Before departure from Hamburg, the plane will be loaded with additional extensively disinfected cargo which will remain sealed until the flight.
“The Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA) crew includes technicians and ground staff for on-site handling and maintenance who will quarantine after landing in the Falkland Islands due to government requirements,“ read in Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA)‘s statement.
The return flight is scheduled to depart from Munich on February 3, 2021. The airline will be flying another Polarstern crew, who have been on the resupply mission in Station III in Antarctica since December 20, 2020, and will be returning to Germany.
